Infections with the Group A Streptococcus (GAS ) are very common at the moment and can cause Scarlet Fever. This mainly affects children and Amoxicillin is the most common treatment. However, the availability of and prices of Amoxicillin products for pharmacies and dispensing doctors has been put under pressure by this outbreak.
There have been rises in the prices of 20 out of the 32 commonly available Amoxicillin containing products in recent months, with the suspensions and syrups having the highest price increases. The department of health and social care DHSC have granted 5 concessions for these products in recent weeks and overall average prices for Amoxicillin products have risen by 31% since January 2022.
The three most extreme prices rises of over 229% since January are in Amoxicillin Suspension S/F 250mg/5ml 100ml, Amoxicillin Syrup 125mg/5ml 100ml and Amoxicillin Syrup S/F 250mg/5ml 100ml. Suspensions and syrups make up 60% of the products which experienced price rises.
