This suspension is one that has been hovering on the edge of unprofitability for a long time and has seen more concessions granted (32) in 2023 – 2024 that any other generic.
Between Nov 2017 and Dec 2019 market prices averaged close to or below £4.00. This looks to be the trigger that caused the price spike, peaking at £8.14 in May 2020. Prices then fell as supply was restored, reaching £4.12 in Feb 2022.
However, it looks as if this repetition of unprofitability caused manufacturers to cancel any further production, resulting in a long term price rise, a host of concession and two and a half years of supply disruption.
If manufacturers’ cost of goods can be discovered through past trigger points, that could serve as an ‘offside’ area for reimbursement purposes, reducing the chances of manufacturer withdrawal, concessions and shortages.
