Recently Charles Joynson, WaveData MD, ran a pricing analysis on Acetazolamide Tabs 250mg 112 and found that Pharmacies and Dispensing Doctors had been losing £18.00 each time they dispensed this product in the three months to end March. Today we thought we’d look at all the generic products in the drug tariff to see how many are profitable and how many are unprofitable.
We used the average of the market prices that we collect from Pharmacies and Dispensing Doctors. Our analysis showed that 85% are profitable, 3% breakeven for the Pharmacy, but a further 12% are unprofitable. In April this year the most extreme of these losers was Trihexyphenidyl Tabs 2mg 84 which lost 546% each time it was dispensed. The average market price is £20.04, and the drug tariff price is £3.10, so the temptation to send the Patient elsewhere must be strong. An additional concession of £14.40 would have helped reduce the loss.
