The wholesaler discount for generic products has traditionally been assumed to be about 15%. However, WaveData thought it would be useful to share the bigger picture of pharmacy discounts for generics.
Both the English drug tariff and the concession prices were included in the analysis, to present a realistic picture.
You can see from the graph that there has been a long term reduction in the discounts although there has been a recovery in 2019 and 2020.
This recent recovery may relate to Brexit, but the long term reductions may relate to rising wage rates in developing world countries.
Although this is a big picture analysis, the actual discounts in individual months varied enormously, from 98% profit to 99% loss.
